Marko Kotilainen (33 years) began playing the accordion at the age of 5, inspired by his father's accordion hobby. Marko plays with the Joensuu Accordion Quartet, which reached a joint number one place in the accordion bands’ Championship competition in 2008. He has also accompanied, for a long time, the Motora folk dance groups, with his band Rälläkkä. His hobby has been a counterbalance to science studies, and dissertation research. He is the father of two daughters, and his main job is teaching math and chemistry in high school.


The Golden Accordion 2011



The winner of the Golden Acordion 2010 will represent Finland in the Primus Ikaalinen competition (live on TV on 1 July 2011).

Elina Joensuu (21 years) began playing at the age of 8, inspired by her father, and has been playing for 13 years. Seppo Heikkilä was Elina’s music teacher for the first ten years, and now her teacher is Janne Lindgren. Mustasaari-born Elina studies nursing in Seinäjoki. Her hobbies are jogging and knitting.

Juuso-Aarne Kontiainen (18 years) has been playing the accordion for about 9 years. His teacher, at Lappeenranta Music Institute, is Seppo Valkeajoki. Juuso-Aarne likes testing his boundaries, therefore he was attracted by the Golden Accordion competition to find his level.

Emilia Mäkelä (22 years) studies music pedagogy at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. Her teacher is Erik Brander. Emilia, from Kaustinen, was inspired into the playing career by her own grandfather, who was an accordion player and a great accordion music lover himself. Emilia has accumulated 13 years of playing, and in addition to the chromatic she also knows the diatonic accordion.

Timo Hautamäki (17 years) has been playing the accordion for 7 years. His teachers are Vesa Formunen and Antti Lehtola. Right from the start Timo has played with the Ruosniemen Hanurit group. An active young man, he also plays the piano, plays chess, and goes bowling. He spends time with friends, play at rehearsals, and evening events for young people.  So he is usually at home only at night-time.

Ella Laiho (24 years) started playing accordion, following in her cousin’s footsteps, at the age of 12. These days she plays at the Accordion Club of Turku, an entertainment orchestra, as a hobby. Ella tours with her cousins occasionally, always in good spirits. The Scouts are also included in her leisure activities, as well as fishing, if there is time. Ella is studying for her second profession and already has a family of her own.
